Several midstate bus services could consolidate to cut costs

(Harrisburg) -- The state's transportation agency is looking for ways to save money on several midstate transit services. PennDOT spokeswoman Erin Waters says the department wants to conduct a study that would analyze the structures and routes of Capital Area Transit in Cumberland and Dauphin counties, rabbittransit in York County, the Red Rose Transit Authority in Lancaster County, and Lebanon Transit in Lebanon. Waters says the study would explore several ways to cut costs for the bus lines. "The reality is that no matter how much the study costs, and that'll be in the numbers of thousands, we're seeing other areas where we can save millions over a couple of years when you look at consolidating some of these functions," she says. Waters says changing routes and sharing more services could also help save money and increase ridership. County commissioners would be required to approve the nine-month study before it would begin.
