Senator Toomey votes no on debt deal

Written by  Tim Lambert and Radio Pennsylvania

(Washington) -- The state's junior U.S. senator is one of two members of Pennsylvania's Congressional delegation to vote against the deficit-reduction package allowing the federal government to continue to borrow. Republican Pat Toomey says the debt deal doesn't contain meaningful spending cuts or a sustainable fiscal path. He says he's concerned the longterm cuts won't materialize. "I came to Washington to do two things. To restore some fiscal sanity and to bring control to our budget," he says. "So, that we can do the second thing, which is economic growth and the job creation that we badly need. And I'm going to continue working on both of those things." Democratic Senator Bob Casey was a "Yes" vote. He says it's time for lawmakers to put aside partisan politics and work on creating jobs. "We're turning the focus of the country now to the issue that they want us to work on," he says, "At a time when people are frustrated and angry and are tired of the finger-pointing and the whining and the political back-and-forth of Washington." The deal allows for an increase in the nation's borrowing limit, with the promise of more than $2 trillion in budget cuts over the next decade. In the House, the lone Pennsylvania lawmaker to vote against it was Pittsburgh Democrat Mike Doyle. All 18 others voted for it.
