(Harrisburg) -- Seven schools in Harrisburg and Lancaster are in line to receive a portion of some $66 million in federal improvement grants. State Education Secretary Ron Tomalis says the money will go to 26 of Pennsylvania's lowest-performing schools. The Harrisburg School District will receive nearly $12 million, while the School District of Lancaster will get $4.3 million. Eligible schools had to adopt and implement one of four reform models developed by the federal government. Five schools in Harrisburg and two in Lancaster chose the "transformation" model. That means, among other things, teachers and principals must be assessed using a rigorous evaluation system and staff must be involved in curriculum design and development. The grants are awarded through a competitive application process. To be eligible, schools had to failed to make substantial progress on state assessments or have a graduation rate of less than 60 percent for at least two of the last three years.
