(Philadelphia) -- A recent report ranks Pennsylvania number one in the nation for its number of structurally deficient bridges. The Pennsylvania Public Interest Research Group published the study saying more than 26 percent of the state's bridges are rated structurally deficient. Group associate Alana Miller says the state should focus on fixing existing bridges, rather than building new ones. "We've been putting off maintenance on these bridges. Highway builders are lobbying for more roads and ever-wider highways, but we really need to focus on the ones that already exist. We can't afford to waste tax dollars on something new when we have something to fix right now," Miller says. She adds the state is not directing enough funding to bridge projects. Miller says improving existing bridges would ease traffic congestion, create jobs and increase safety.
