Record rainfall leads to surge in mosquito population

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- Record rainfalls are leading to record numbers of mosquitoes in the midstate. The remnants of back-to-back storms, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, left a lot of standing water, where mosquitoes are likely to breed. State Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Kevin Sunday says the uptick in mosquitoes means a greater risk for West Nile Virus. "Even before the flooding, we were tracking about 25 percent more west nile activity in mosquitoes across the state when compared to this time last year. Since the flooding, we've seen about a 10 percent increase in mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus," Sunday says. He adds additional mosquito-control spraying is underway in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. He says it should continue for at least a month. The DEP is also spraying in flood-affected areas in northeastern and north central PA.
