Reading schools agree to plan to fight racism; inequality

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- The Reading School District has agreed to a five-year plan to combat racism and inequality in its schools. The legally binding deal with the state Human Relations Commission includes measures to improve school safety, equal opportunities for both educational and employment. The plan calls for the hiring more teachers and a so-called "equity coordinator." The commission reports 76 percent of the school district's enrollment is identified as Latino or Hispanic, while 11 percent is African-American and other minority ethnic and racial groups.
