Project aims to return rail service to Union County community

Written by  Tim Lambert, witf Multimedia News Director

(Lewisburg) -- A Union County community could have train service for the first time in nearly 40 years. The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority hopes a nearly $1.9 million project will be completed by the end of the year to provide rail freight service to Allenwood. Under the proposal, the Great Stream Commons business park will be served by the Union County Industrial Railroad as a way of attracting more companies to the facility. "With increased traffic congestion and the high cost of fuel, rail service is very attractive to companies as they evaluate new locations," Union County Commissioner John Showers says. "The addition of rail service at Great Stream Commons will be a big plus as UCEDC seeks tenants for the business park." Showers represents Union County on the Board of the Joint Rail Authority. About the cost will involve reconstructing the White Deer railroad bridge. A public meeting is slated for January 25th at the Allenwood fire company.
