Power companies discuss response to recent historic flooding

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- Power companies attributed historic power outages during and after Hurricane Irene to extensive flooding and wind damage. The Public Utility Commission says about six percent of the 1.3 million customers who lost power at some point because of the storm didn’t get it back for three or more days. Mike Innocenzo, of PECO, says wind damage to trees caused many of the repeat outages. "As you got to those last couple days of the storm, the tree limb that was hanging that may not have taken out the customers one Monday let loose on Wednesday and we had a couple of those, that was something we dealt with during the week," Innocenzo. He and other power company representatives held a public meeting with the PUC to discuss how to improve responses to outages. Many companies pledged to redouble their efforts to keep in touch with customers using social media.
