(Harrisburg) -- A state House proposal looks to shift more money from the Turnpike to fund the Commonwealth's mass transit systems. Democratic Representative Dan Frankel is calling for the toll road's entire annual $450 million contribution to be earmarked for mass transit. Currently, $250 million of that money is used in such a way. Frankel says bus, trolley and light rail systems are as critical as roads and bridges. "I think it's important that we realize that ensuring adequate levels of funding for mass transit is beneficial to all of us, as it provides important maintenance and transit jobs for Pennsylvania workers and supports the efficient transit systems that so many of our citizens rely on," he says. Frankel says mass transit ridership is growing across the state. The Allegheny County lawmaker adds the extra Turnpike cash would be spent statewide, not just in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
