PennDOT secretary says there's no price tag on flood damage yet

Written by  Megan Lello and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- About 12,000 miles of roads and 3,000 miles of bridges were damaged by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee within the past month. But PennDOT officials have not yet determined how much money it will cost the agency to fix the affected infrastructure. PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch says he doesn't believe all of the financial losses can be made up. "I think, at best, we can expect about a 60 percent recovery," he says. "What that means to us is, let's assume for the sake of discussion, it's $200 million of damage. Effectively, we might get $120 million of that back." Schoch says the storms caused 550 roads and bridges to close across the state, and 46 of those haven't opened back up. He adds PennDOT crews have inspected all of the roads and 98 percent of the bridges that were affected.
