(Harrisburg) -- Dauphin County District Judge William Wenner has ruled that top Penn State officials Tim Curley and Gary Schultz will go to trial for charges that they failed to report a suspicion of child abuse by Jerry Sandusky and then lied about it to a grand jury. First to take the stand in today's preliminary hearing was Mike McQueary, an assistant football coach at Penn State and the only professed eyewitness of child sex crimes alleged against Sandusky. McQueary says in 2002, he entered a Penn State locker room, heard two or three rhythmic slapping sounds, and saw Sandusky in a shower naked, hugging a young, pre-pubescent boy from behind. He says both Sandusky and the boy looked him in the eye. The witness testified reporting what he saw to former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno. Defense attorneys for Curley and Schultz repeatedly asked McQueary exactly how he described what he saw, and if he used graphic detail. McQueary said he wouldn’t have gone into "great detail of sexual acts" when talking to Paterno, but insisted he did explain he had seen something sexual. Defense attorneys for Curley and Schultz also asked McQueary why he didn’t contact the police himself, first. McQueary said it was because of the delicate nature of the situation. McQueary recalled meeting with Curley and Schultz nine or ten days later. He said he’s sure they finished that meeting knowing that what he saw was of a "sexual nature" and was "wrong."
