(Harrisburg) -- As forecasters keep a close eye on Hurricane Irene, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency is reminding people to prepare for high winds and heavy rains this weekend. PEMA says while the storm is expected to primarily hit the southeastern part of the state, residents should remain ready to deal with its impact. Across the state, utility crews, airports and other agencies have extra personnel on stand-by to help deal with potential problems. The American Red Cross says it's getting shelter supplies ready in low-lying areas in the event that evacuations have to be ordered.
PEMA says if roads become impassable or power is lost, people should be prepared to survive on their own for at least three days.
Here are some tips issued by the agency:
Residents should have disaster preparedness supplies on hand:
Flashlights and extra batteries
Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries
First aid kit and manual
Emergency food and water
Non-electric can opener
Essential medicines/prescriptions
Cash, credit cards and important legal documents
Sturdy shoes
If residents are ordered to evacuate, they should take:
Checkbooks
Driver's license;
Credit card information;
Birth certificates;
Social Security cards; and
Other forms and documents proving ownership/identity.
Never drive into low-lying areas or over roads and bridges that are already under water. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep away the average car.
Individuals and families need to have a communication plan in place in order to contact or find each other if separated. As the storm approaches, residents should listen to and closely follow instructions from local and state authorities.
