(Blue Ball) -- Two Lancaster County fire companies plan to consolidate their operations next year. More than 125 volunteer firefighters in Blue Ball and Liberty will serve in one company as a way to improve services and save money. "The companies are two miles apart and work with each other regularly," said Blue Ball Fire Chief Roy Mellinger. "It just makes sense because both companies will benefit while improving fire protection for the community." The move will allow the consolidated department to combine vehicles and equipment. Liberty Fire Chief Larry Martin says the partnership will save at least $500,000 almost immediately, since the new company will not have to replace one engine. No date has been set to complete the consolidation.
