(Harrisburg) -- The state says it will start enforcing its sales tax policy among online and catalog retailers that have some kind of physical presence in Pennsylvania. Department of Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser says the agency is just clarifying existing state law that goes back to 1971. "Hypothetically speaking, any company that uses their own trucks or employees or other means to deliver products - that does, in fact, establish nexus and it does, in fact, mean they need to collect and remit sales tax," Meuser says. Businesses with a physical presence in the state will need to register to collect sales tax by next February. For those products that don’t include sales tax, consumers can voluntarily submit a use tax, which can be indicated on next year’s state personal income tax return. The commonwealth estimates it’ll lose $380 million this year because of unpaid sales tax on items bought online.
