PA Health Department warns of risks associated with flood clean-up

Written by  Tim Lambert and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- Clean-up operations in flood damaged areas of the midstate may take a few weeks to complete. The state Health Department is reminding those who were affected to get their homes and businesses dried out as quickly as possible. Spokeswoman Christine Cronkright says damp conditions can be a breeding ground for mold and notes how it can grow in as little as two days after flooding. She says people need to look at all areas of their home that have become wet. "Make sure that everything is well ventilated," she says. "Porous materials can trap mold, so paper, rags, wallboards, ceiling tiles, sheet rock, carpeting and wood really should all be thrown out if they have become wet within the flood." Cronkright says damp areas need to be cleaned and disinfected. People should wear protective, rubber gloves and use a heavy duty mask -- she recommends what's known as an N-95 mask -- to help with any respiratory issues they may encounter while cleaning for an extended period.
