(Harrisburg) -- The state collected less in tax revenue last month than it expected. But, the Revenue Department isn’t expecting a change of fortune. The commonwealth’s major revenue haul comes from three categories: sales tax, personal income tax and corporation tax. All three collections were lower than the state expected last month. In fact, the only area that’s above estimate is the money from taxes on cigarettes, malt beverages, liquor, and table games -- which paints a picture of an economy so sluggish one might think it’s driving people to smoke more, drink more and gamble. "I don’t know that I would infer that," says Elizabeth Brassell, a Revenue Department spokeswoman. "You are correct that the gambling, that category aggregated is above estimate." Brassell, says the harsh reality put the state $215 million off what it expected to collect. She says collections are larger than they were in September 2010, but economic conditions are expected to keep tax collections below estimate for the rest of the fiscal year.
