PA Attorney General offers few new details in Sandusky case involving Penn State

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- The state Attorney General is not ruling out additional charges being filed in the ongoing investigation into child sex crime charges against former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. While limiting her comments to information contained in the grand jury report, Attorney General Linda Kelly says Penn State’s longtime head coach Joe Paterno will not be charged for failing to report child abuse to authorities. "He’s been cooperative with the investigators in this case. He is not regarded as a target at this point," she says." But, Kelly was more circumspect when asked about possible charges against University President Graham Spanier. "Uh, I’m limited to what’s contained in the presentment and that this is an ongoing investigation," she says. The State Police Commissioner says he's troubled by the Sandusky case. Commissioner Frank Noonan previously served as the chief of investigations at the state Attorney General's Office, so he's been part of the Sandusky probe for several years. He's hoping more victims come forward now that charges have been filed against the former Penn State assistant football coach for the sexual abuse of eight children over a 15-year period. He says he’s glad word is finally out about these allegations and he personally thinks authorities will be hearing from additional child abuse victims. "This whole case is extr....has been troubling me for two years and keeping quiet about it has been troubling me for two years," he says. "So I’m glad that people know now exactly what was going on. And hopefully as facts, I mean, they’re innocent until proven guilty, we’ll have a trial. But at least now there’s not this cover of secrecy." Paterno testified to a grand jury that he reported a graduate assistant’s eyewitness account of Sandusky sexually abusing a boy to Penn State administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, who have been charged with failing to report the abuse to state authorities and lying about what they allegedly knew to a grand jury. Sandusky is charged with 40 criminal counts for the alleged sexual abuse of eight boys he knew through their involvement in his Second Mile charity for at-risk children. Kelly says two of the alleged victims have not been identified.
