October snow storm expected today

Written by  Tim Lambert and Radio Pennsylvania

(Undated) -- A rare October snow storm is expected to hit the midstate  today. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a winter storm warning until 10:00 p.m. and predicts six to 10 inches of snow across the entire region by tonight. Meteorologist Bill Gartner says there isn't much doubt about this one. "Right now, we're fairly confident there's going to be, certainly, significant snow across a good part of Pennsylvania," he says. "Whether it ends up being in the eight to 10 inch range or a little bit less than that, right now it's the amounts and what the total amounts will be." Gartner says the storm should hit the southeast part of the state after midnight and work it's way to central PA by daybreak. He warns the heavy, wet snow may pile up on power lines and tree branches, leading to possible power outages in some areas. PennDot crews are prepared to deal with the storm. Spokesman Steve Chizmar says plow trucks across the state are ready to go and the salt supply is stocked. He warns drivers to take their time if they're out and about tomorrow, especially since their winter driving skills may be rusty. "We haven't had to use them in awhile. That's the reality," he says. "So, we're really calling upon motorists to really exercise caution. It's good that it's going to actually happen on a weekend, but motorists really still need to slow down (and) allow extra space between vehicles." Chizmar says plows were out in Centre County in the last week or so after a snowfall. He adds PennDot has about 642,000 tons of salt on hand for the upcoming winter months. More than 2,200 trucks and 5,400 operators are on standby. Motorists are also being reminded to to check road conditons by utilizing 511PA. The service provides traffic delay warnings, forecasts and access to more than 500 traffic cameras, among other things.
