No tax increases in Dauphin County commissioners' proposed 2012 budget

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Harrisburg) -- Some midstate county commissioners have proposed a budget that holds the line on taxes for the seventh year in a row. The spending plan drafted by Dauphin County Commissioners Jeff Haste, Mike Pries, and George Hartwick calls for nearly $200 million in spending next year. The 2012 plan is a decrease of about $78,000 from this year's budget. "We're continuing to hold the line on property taxes," Haste says. "This board remains committed to managing tax dollars responsibly so that citizens who are already struggling in this stagnant economy will not be burdened even more." Pries adds, "In an effort to offset rising health care and pensions cost, we've instituted a hiring freeze and changes to employee health care, which included a wellness program and employee co-pays for some health services." The millage rate under the commissioners' plan would be 6.876 mills. The proposed 2012 budget is posted online and will be open to public comment for the next 20 days.
