New teen driver law does not include cell phone restrictions

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- Governor Corbett has signed a new teen driver safety measure into law, but it does not deal with the use of cell phones. State Representative Kathy Watson (R-Bucks), the chief sponsor of the bill, says there's a reason calling and texting behind the wheel were left out of the age-specifc bill. "It doesn't matter if you're texting when you're 18 or 38 or 68. It's not good. Your eyes absolutely leave the road," Watson says. Governor Corbett wants lawmakers to pass a texting-and-driving ban. AAA supports a ban on both texting and using handheld phones behind the wheel. The new law places limits on how many passengers teen drivers can have in the car,and reqires them to have more behind-the-wheel experience to get a license.
