New state park could be created in central Pennsylvania

(Lewisburg) -- A six-mile stretch of land along a popular spot for boaters in the central Susquehanna Valley could be getting a makeover. PennDOT could fund a project that would transform the land surrounding Lake Augusta in Northumberland, Union, and Snyder counties. Tom Grbenick, director of SEDA-COG's Community Resource Center, says the proposal would make it easier for folks to get around. "It addresses a variety of street and roadway safety improvements, intersection crossings to facilitate pedestrian traffic, also a series of bike and pedestrian improvements, and even a scenic parkway proposal connecting the areas of Shamokin Dam and Northumberland," he says. Grbenick says a new state park could be created to connect up to seven municipalities in the area or Shikellamy State Park in Northumberland and Union counties could be expanded. He adds there's no cost yet associated with the project, which could take up to 12 years to complete.
