New mobile website tracks locations for hiking, fishing

(Bethlehem) -- Several midstate parks and recreational areas are featured on a new mobile website designed to help people locate nearby places to hike and fish. The Appalachian Mountain Club's new website for smart phones allows users to find maps and directions to more than 20 parks in the state, such as Caledonia State Park in Adams and Franklin counties, the Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail in Dauphin County, and Money Rocks County Park in Lancaster County. Mark Zakutansky, with the outdoors organization, says the website's goal is to take the hassle out of planning outdoor activities for busy families or individuals. "It uses the GPS that's built into your phone so that the device knows where you're located right then and there, and it'll be able to query the local hiking locations, the nearest park, or the nearest trail head, and then it'll give you directions to that location so you can get outside quickly and easily," he says. Zakutansky says the website points to places to hike, fish, bike, and ride horses in the Pennsylvania Highlands, which covers two million acres from the Lehigh Valley to the Maryland border. He adds the organization's also recently launched a blog that aims to promote water and land conservation in the state.
