New law to protect student athletes with head injuries takes effect in July

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Hummelstown) -- A ceremonial bill signing for a law meant to minimize head injuries among student athletes is taking on new meaning after the Penn State scandal. The law requires coaches to pull student-athletes out of an activity if there’s a chance they suffered a head injury. It also threatens coaches with suspension if they let students off the bench before getting medical permission, first. But in light of a week of hearing about Penn State administrators’ alleged role in the Jerry Sandusky case, the comments of Governor Corbett and Senator Pat Browne seem to allude to missteps in the football program after allegations of child sexual abuse. "To coaches, the message is, look out for your players," Governor Corbett says. "Nobody’s health, nobody’s life, is worth a game of football." Browne says, "Character building, competition, means nothing unless we are smart and we use our appropriate protocols to make sure our students are safe." The law goes into effect in July, giving coaches more time to be trained in how to spot possible concussions.
