New health facility scheduled for Reading could help cut costs for uninsured

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Reading) -- One of the state's poorest cities is expected to house a new health center to provide care to uninsured and low-income residents within the coming months. The Berks Community Health Center nonprofit group is looking to open a facility in Reading that would adhere to standards reserved for federally-qualified health groups. Gary Rightmire, co-chairman of the organization, says it would bill patients according to a sliding fee scale based on their income and also provide low-cost prescriptions. He says the center would fill a need. "In fact, [Reading] is the sixth-poorest city in the United States with over 65,000 people," he says. "34 percent of the city's population is below the poverty level, and it's the only one of the top six that does not have a federally-qualified health center." The new health care system would take the place of the Reading Hospital and Medical Center's health dispensary in Reading. The new facility could open within the next six months.
