Natural gas drillers in New York can use compulsory integration to take land

Written by  Emma Jacobs/Innovation Trail

(Syracuse, NY) -- Most people agree it’s wrong to just take someone’s property and give it to someone else. But in New York state, there’s a grey area in the rules for natural gas drilling called compulsory integration. StateImpact Pennsylvania presents this report by the Innovation Trail's Emma Jacobs. It's the second installment in her series on the pressures landowners face when dealing with drillers.

In the first installment, Jacobs took a look at how kitchen table talks between landmen and property owners represent the front lines of the expansion of natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania. Support for the Innovation Trail comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Innovation Trail is a collaboration between five upstate New York public media outlets, reporting about that state's innovation economy. It's partnering with StateImpact Pennsylvania to look at how natural gas drilling is impacting communities.
