National Park Service ponders future of Gettysburg Cyclorama building

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Gettysburg) -- The future of a building that once housed the famous Cyclorama painting of the Battle of Gettysburg may soon be decided. The National Park Service is now overseeing an environmental study to decide what will happen to the vacant Cyclorama building located at Cemetery Ridge in Gettysburg. Spokeswoman Katie Lawhon says the NPS will choose from several possible plans for the site. "Possible options for the future of the building include keeping the building on its current site and mothballing it, reusing the building on its current site, relocating the building to a new site, and demolishing the building to bring back features from the battle era," she says. A decade ago, the Park Service had decided to demolish the Cyclorama building, but a lawsuit against the agency now requires it to look at other options. The study is scheduled to take up to six months to complete. The building was designed by famed architect Richard Neutra.

Mothball it for up to say, ten years. In that time perhaps a need will come for the structure again and it will be easier to justify whatever that expense may be. In the meantime, consider installing a new painting/scene--why not rural life just before the Civil War? Just because Cycloramas are out of style now does not mean they'll always be overlooked.
