(Fairview Township) -- A helicopter training program that brings in more than $1 million to the region each year could soon have a new home in the west. The federal government has proposed moving the Pennsylvania National Guard's Lakota helicopter training program, which is the only such effort in the country. It would go from Capital City Airport in Fairview Township, York County to Arizona. Todd Smith is the general manager for CXY Aviation, which operates the airport. He says the move may hurt midstate businesses because hundreds of pilots visit who take part in the program frequent hotels and restaurants. "It's significant because it's $1.5 million today, but you pretty much double that by 2015, when Pennsylvania was supposed to have 18 of those helicopters and double the number of students," he says. "Now you're talking close to $3 million, if the math holds up." Smith says he believes the earmarking of federal funds is the reason for the proposed move. The program's Lakota helicopters are generally used for noncombat activities such as search-and-rescue missions and have been flown both in the U.S. and overseas.
