Most flood insurance has a 30-day waiting period

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Lemoyne) -- New flood insurance policies will likely not help property owners looking to cover damages from recent flooding across the midstate. Don Kingsbury is an insurance broker with Christian-Baker Company in Lemoyne, Cumberland County. He says the vast majority of people who buy flood insurance expecting immediate coverage will be disappointed. "There's a 30-day waiting period for the typical purchase of flood insurance. There's one exception to that. That is, if you're purchasing a property and the bank requires that you buy flood insurance," Kingsbury says. He says insurance agencies and banks use flood maps to determine which type of flood zone properties fall under. That location then determines flood insurance rates. He says several insurance companies provide flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
