MoneyWorks: LIHEAP changes

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- A state grant program to help people pay their heating bills is expected to have enough money to handle applications until March. That’s when the demand usually dies down for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program - or LIHEAP. As part of our MoneyWorks series, witf's Craig Layne spoke State Department of Public Welfare spokeswoman Anne Bale. She says the Commonwealth prepared for federal funding cuts that hit the program this year.

There were a few important facts left out. First, the amount for the minimum amount and for crisis was incredibly lowered, from $300/$400 to $100/$300 respectively. Most oil companies in our area will not deliver for less than 100 gallons. So that means the citizen, who is already stretched for cash, must come up with the remainder. Second, the real human toll for this was not even mentioned. I wonder how many more fires will be caused by kerosene heaters, how many more children will be burnt by touching electric heaters, how many more seniors will literally freeze to death. Those figures are all measurable and worth obtaining. The Governor and his high-priced, out-of-touch, selfish and greedy friends should have to live through a PA winter depending on portable heaters. WITF does a great job going beyond the bureaucrats' spin. Please do so for this.

Also: Does anyone know how much this cut back will harm small oil companies that are usually family-owned? What will the economic impact from that - especially in lost jobs - be?
