Milton Hershey School building more homes for students

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Hershey) -- The Milton Hershey School is building more homes for its students. The Derry Township, Dauphin County, campus will see construction begin on four additional houses this spring. Four other new student homes are currently being built. The expansion will bring the total number of homes on the school's North Campus to 24. MHS is a cost-free residential school for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade live on campus with about 10 or 12 other students of similar ages and of the same gender who are cared for by married houseparent couples.  The state Attorney General's office is currently investigating the trust that runs the Milton Hershey School amid questions over how much it paid for a golf course bought to serve as a buffer zone for the school.

The school is currently being sued by a child with HIV who was denied enrollment because of his health status.

witf's Tim Lambert produced a two-part series on the MHS in September 2010 looking at the school itself and some of the controversies surrounding it at the time.
