(Lancaster) -- A midstate college is one of seven schools in the country to receive grant funding for its project on sexual harassment among middle school students. Millersville University in Lancaster County has received a $5,000 grant from the nonprofit The American Association of University Women for a new project that addresses sexual harassment in six schools in the School District of Lancaster. Tracey Weis, an associate history professor at Millersville who's in charge of the initiative, says a group of Millersville students and faculty members will meet with seventh- and eighth-graders to help them form a blog so kids can share personal stories about harassment. She says it makes sense to pair up 12- and 13-year-olds with college students. "We are trying to focus on getting young college students talking with middle students. We've seen that as very effective," she says. "Certainly, younger people are happy, sometimes, to listen to their teachers and other adults, but I think they really respond well when they're talking to someone who's just a few years older than they are." Weis says the team will also work with parents and teachers to come up with ways to help prevent sexual harassment. She adds she hopes the project helps people realize sexual harassment affects both boys and girls and is becoming a problem among students well before they reach high school.
