(Harrisburg) -- Governor Corbett has signed into law a measure to make a permanent space for a military veteran on the state Civil Service Commission. The independent three-person panel oversees the hiring of state employees. Corbett says requiring a veteran be present on the board makes it more likely that vets will get the preference they’re entitled to when applying for state civil service jobs. "We discovered that the Pennsylvania civil service commission has not always met its goal of seeing that the veterans get the extra consideration they earned," he says. Corbett says Auditor General Jack Wagner is responsible for bringing attention to the issue with his review of the commission. In 2008, Wagner reported state agencies were filling positions without giving proper consideration to eligible veterans who have a state-mandated hiring preference. The AG attributed it to poor oversight by the Civil Service Commission.
