Midstate lawmaker to hold forum on Marcellus Shale drilling

Written by  Melanie Herschorn

(Gettysburg) -- A midstate lawmaker will host a forum in Gettysburg tonight to educate the public about drilling in the Marcellus Shale natural gas formation. Those who attend Representative Dan Moul's meeting can expect to see what a drill rig looks like, how it operates and learn about the process of hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking. Moul says he's made several trips to Pennsylvania drilling sites to educate himself about natural gas extraction. He says he wants to clear up misinformation about the fracking process and to explain how drilling can be done underground. "What used to take 60 or 70 or 80 wells to reach an area, with the horizontal drilling they can now do with one or one well site," he says. "It's become a whole lot less encumbranced on to our landscape." Moul, a Republican who represents Adams and Franklin counties, says developing the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry could bring thousands of jobs to the commonwealth. Panelists at this evening's forum are representatives from the state department of Environmental protection, natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy, Pennsylvania State University Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research, and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission. The forum will be held at 6 p.m. at Gettysburg Fire Department, 35 N. Stratton St., Gettysburg.
