Midstate feels tremors from 5.8 magintude earthquake centered in Virginia

Written by  Tim Lambert, witf Multimedia News Director

(Undated) -- Much of the midstate has felt the tremors from a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia. No immediate reports of damage or injuries have been reported during the brief wave of tremors just before 2:00 p.m. Bud Mertz, operations director for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, says it’s too soon to say if there's any substantial damage in the commonwealth. "Things are pretty preliminary coming in as far as we’ve had reports of a couple bridges that may be damaged, a couple buildings that may be damaged," he says. "Some gas lines, some water lines, those type of utilities." Exelon Nuclear says "an unusual event" has been declared at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power station in York County and the Three Mile Island plant in Dauphin County, but each facility is functioning normally. An "unusual event" is the lowest level emergency classification, as determined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. PennDOT inspectors are also doing precautionary inspections of bridges around the state.
