Midstate fallen firefighters to be honored in national ceremony

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Emmitsburg, Md.) -- Douglas Farrington of the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company in York County and Douglas Smith of Liberty Hose Company Number One in Williamstown, Dauphin County, will be two of eight Pennsylvania firefighters honored this Sunday at the National Filre Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Both firefighters died of heart attacks while responding to, or shortly after returning from, fire calls. Linda Hurley of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation says the event is a chance to reflect on the loss of 72 firefighters from across the country who gave their lives last year. "They're the people who are running into the buildings to save people when everybody else is exiting the buildings. So it's a way of to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities," Hurley says. She says 17 firefighters whose line-of-duty deaths were previously unknown to the foundation will be added as well. Hurley adds many fire departments nationwide will conduct simultaneous services. The National Firefighters Memorial was established in 1981.
