(Washington) -- Local members of Congress are responding to President Obama's State of the Union address. Joe Pitts, a Republican who represents Lancaster County, says Mr. Obama had some good things to say about supporting the military and opening up lands for energy exploration. "I just hope that his actions will match his rhetoric," Pitts says. "Our military is about to face deep cuts, and for years this administration has blocked permits for oil and gas," he adds. Pitts says he was disappointed with the President's message on taxes and the role of government. Meantime, Todd Platts, who represents Adams and York counties and part of Cumberland County, says there are some things Republican lawmakers and the President can agree on... "I share his perspective in making sure our country's competing on a level playing field, and not allowing other countries to compete unfairly with our American workers. And also focus on energy - we need to have an 'all of the above' energy approach - and I share his position on that," Platts says. The Republican criticized Mr. Obama's recent decision to deny permits for the Keystone XL pipeline that would carry Canadian oil across the nation to the Gulf Coast. Platts is retiring after 12 years in office, and he says it was an honor that after the address, he and his family got to spend a few minutes chatting with Mr. Obama.
