Midstate colleges recognized for efforts to go green

Written by  Tim Lambert and Radio Pennsylvania

(Undated) -- Today is Earth Day and five midstate colleges and universities are being recognized for their efforts to become more environmentally responsible. Bucknell, Millersville, Gettysburg, Dickinson and Franklin and Marshall are among the 20 Pennsylvania institutions of higher learning named to the new Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges. Rachel Gutter is the director of the U.S. Green Building Council's Center for Green Schools. She says students are driving the movement. "In fact, the reason why we initially chose to produce the guide with the Princeton Review was because of the survey that they do every year," she says, "That found, for instance this year, that 69 percent of prospective college students say that a college or universities' commitment to sustainability will impact their decision as to whether or not they're going to attend." Gutter says a major focus on campuses is the the pursuit of carbon neutrality, which means schools are producing as much electricity as they're actually using. The guide recognizes colleges for their commitment to environmentally-responsible designs or operations.
