Middletown residents clean up following flooding

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Middletown) -- Thousands of people in south central Pennsylvania continue to clean up as flood waters from the Susquehanna River recede. The swollen river and the nearby Swatara Creek inundated entire blocks in Middletown, Dauphin County. Mick Shrauder says flood waters lifted his heating oil tank from its base, spilling the fuel into the murky water that filled his basement to the brim. "Oil's floating everywhere on top of the water. Everything in the house reeks of oil, it's a mess. We would have really weathered it pretty good, we're used to flooding going on down here, but when the oil tank goes over, there's not much you can do about that," Shrauder says. He says the flooding brought out the best -- and worst -- in people. As neighbors helped each other with clean-up efforts, National Guard members earlier this weekend helped stop teenagers accused of looting homes in the flood zone. Heidi Ellis helped her sister-in-law clean up after five feet of water caused considerable damage in her home's basement. "The door literally blew off the hinges. You can see the wood and everything that came off with the door. The door is bent. I mean, the pressure going through there to bend a door like that is amazing," Ellis says. In Harrisburg, utility crews and inspectors are working from block-to-block to restore power and gas service. In some areas, firefighters are using high-pressure hoses to blast mud from streets.
