Marcellus Shale drilling leads to job creation at Lancaster County facility

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Mount Joy) -- A Lancaster County manufacturing company is benefitting from the boom in natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation, even though it's located hundreds of miles from the center of the activity. Mount Joy Wire Corporation in Mount Joy, Lancaster County has experienced a 20 percent jump in the production of wires for brushes used by drilling companies in the last two years. CEO Tom Duff says the business has needed more help to handle the increasing demand for its product. "It has certainly helped create additional jobs here for us and bring people back to work from the Great Recession," he says. "During 2010, we ended up bringing back almost 30 people who had been on layoff, and since then, we've created about eight additional jobs." Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, who headed the governor's Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission, paid a visit to the facility last week. Duff says he and Cawley spoke about how natural gas drilling can benefit industries in all parts of the state.
