Library of Congress exhibit on display in Lancaster

Written by  Megan Lello and Radio PA

(Lancaster) -- Midstaters can view replicas of the 1455 Gutenberg Bible and a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence as part of a traveling exhibit. The Library of Congress is stopping in Lancaster today and tomorrow with its "Gateway to Knowledge" display, which is designed to teach Americans about the library and its collections. Several panels and computers are housed in a double-sized tractor trailer that will be parked at the Manheim Township Public Library. Traveling docent Abigail Van Gelder says the program isn't just for history buffs. "It's a great learning experience for anyone, whether you're young or old, whether you have an interest in history or are just curious. It's great when parents come in and teach their children about American history and these American history resources that are available right in our own back yard," Van Gelder says. Visitors can also see copies of the original 1962 drawings that first featured Spider-Man in a comic book. The exhibit is expected to travel to as many as 60 sites nationwide this year. The Library of Congress was founded in 1800 and provides access to 20 million digital items through its website.
