Lawyers for Penn State administrators charged in Sandusky case say they'll fight allegations

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- Lawyers for two Penn State officials say they’ll fight charges they looked the other way after hearing allegations of child sexual abuse by Jerry Sandusky, who remained a major presence on the campus even after his 1999 retirement. Athletic Director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz are charged with failing to report suspected child abuse and perjury before a grand jury investigating Sandusky. Surrounded by reporters after an arraignment hearing, Thomas Farrell, the attorney for Schultz, says prosecutors have "manufactured" their charge of perjury. He says head coach Joe Paterno told Schultz and Curley only a vague account of inappropriate behavior. "You folks may have seen Mr. Paterno’s statement. Mr. Paterno’s statement matches their statement. They were given a general allegation," Farrell says. The attorney for Curley says the charge of failure to report is weak and the charge of perjury a last-resort type of charge for prosecutors. The preliminary hearing for both men is set for November 17th. At his request, Curley has taken a leave of absence from his job and Schultz has retired.
