Lawmakers back bill to delay attorneys general from seeking governor's office

Written by  Craig Layne and Radio Pennsylvania

(Harrisburg) -- A small group of state lawmakers is backing a bill that would make state attorneys general wait before running for governor. Democratic Representative Babette Josephs is the prime sponsor of the measure. She says the law would make AGs focus on their job -- and not on politics -- by waiting four years after leaving office to pursue a gubernatorial run. "We want attorneys general who have a passion for justice, who really care about being the lawyer for the people, protecting people from crime, protecting people from fraud," Josephs says. She adds the bill is a proposed constitutional amendment. She says the legislation is a direct response to Tom Corbett's move from AG to the governorship. Only nine lawmakers have signed on as co-sponsors, and the measure stands little chance of advancing in both Republican-dominated chambers.
