Lancaster County school district to solicit taxpayers' thoughts on spending

Written by  Megan Lello, witf Reporter and Producer

(Lancaster) -- A Lancaster County school district is searching for ways to cut costs next academic year. Beginning this month, its school board will host a series of community forums for residents to share how they think the district can curb its spending. Conestoga Valley School District Superintendent Gerald Huesken says this is the second year such forums will be held before school board meetings. He says the cost-saving suggestions will be posted on the district's website, just like last year. "We even had the list of reductions that we were considering posted on our website after each board meeting," he says. "Everything was transparent, and I think the community appreciated that. I think they understood more the final decision because we took the time to go through this process during the school year." Huesken says staff members have agreed to a pay freeze to help save money and the district could offer early retirement plans to some employees as well. The executive director of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association says more school districts are starting to hold such meetings to discuss districts' budgets. The first forum will be held on Monday, November 21st at 6pm at Conestoga Valley Middle School in Lancaster.
