Internet program aims to reduce veterans' unemployment

Written by  Craig Layne and Megan Lello

(Lebanon) -- An effort is underway to reduce the high unemployment rate among military veterans. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lebanon is taking part in the new, Internet-based program called "VA for Vets." The Website offers career coaching, resume building and job postings for vets. The VA center's Beth Kappenstein says it also helps former service members match what they learned in the military to jobs in civilian life. "They're not sure how to translate being a combat soldier into what they can be doing, not just in the VA, but in the civilian sector itself. I think also it has to do with educating the civilian sector to let these veterans into their service," Kappenstein says. She says the Lebanon VA can also give veteran job seekers in-person employment help. The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports unemployment among veterans is nearly three times higher than the national average of 9.1 percent.
