If New York legalizes table games, impact could be felt in PA

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says he’s looking into lifting the Empire state’s constitutional ban on table games in its racetrack casinos. The announcement harkens back to Pennsylvania’s own move to legalize table gaming in its 10 casinos. Gaming revenue in the commonwealth boomed, but New Jersey’s Atlantic City casinos saw their profits suffer.

Doug Harbach with the commonwealth’s Gaming Control Board, says it’s too soon to tell if New York could do to Pennsylvania what Pennsylvania did to New Jersey. "Beause we don’t know, you know, how that expansion would occur, when it would occur, what locations that would occur in, so at this point it’s just a little bit too early to say what the competition would be in regard to Pennsylvania’s casinos," Harbach says.

The commonwealth's 10 casinos made about $2.5 billion dollars last year. Atlantic City’s 11 casinos earned some $3.6 billion the same year - a more than $2 billion drop from 2006.
