(Harrisburg) -- Some midstate farmers as well as those across Pennsylvania are dealing with significant crop loss in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Apples were the most severely-affected crop, but farmers say their peaches, pears, and corn have also been destroyed in some cases. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Spokesman Mark O'Neill says problems varied among counties. "It did cause significant damage to some farms, but not much damage to others. It truly was a sporadic wind event throughout Pennsylvania," he says. "This is an event where, even on a given farm, you may have some areas that were hit heavy and other areas that really were not." O'Neill says some aid is available to farmers who've lost crops, but it's determined by several criteria, including the amount of damage on other farms in the area. He says the hurricane has been yet another obstacle in an already-difficult season for farmers, who've had to plant crops later in the year due to wet weather.
