(Harrisburg) -- Republican lawmakers are committed to not raising taxes. But the state’s roads and bridges are in poor shape. The state House is scheduled to consider a familiar proposal that would make it okay for government to partner with the private sector on transportation projects. Republican state Senator Jake Corman, of Centre County, says public private partnerships get spotty support because they don’t go far enough to fix all the state’s infrastructure problems, like road and bridge capacity in rural areas. "It would only be able to help in high-traffic area, so you're talking more urban areas," he says. "To recover your costs, you would need a traffic count of people going through it, paying a toll." A governor-appointed panel tasked with finding ways to fund transportation projects suggested public-private partnerships could be a useful tool. The bill is slated for a full House vote today.
