Honoring PA artists with disabilities

Written by  Mary Wilson

(Harrisburg) -- The work of artists with disabilities is on display in the Capitol this month. For the past four years, the state Capitol has promoted National Disability Employment Awareness month with an art exhibit just next to the Capitol cafeteria. Ed Butler, head of the Governor’s Office for People with Disabilities, says he applauds the seven Pennsylvania residents whose art is featured this year. "This exhibition highlights talents, artistic expression, and investment in workers with disabilities," he says. State Department of Public Welfare Secretary Gary Alexander says he has come to dislike the word "disabled." "This is not the artwork of disabled people. This is the artwork of intellectual genius," he says. "This is the artwork of people with talent, just like you and me." The artists are from throughout Pennsylvania. Their disabilities include brittle bones, developmental delay, brain injury, and neuromuscular disease. The art stays up until the last Friday in October.
