(Harrisburg) -- With arrival of the unofficial start of summer, outdoor enthusiasts are encouraging Pennsylvanians to hit the hiking trail. The state's 10th annual Hiking Week runs through Sunday and is designed to introduce newcomers to the activity. Curt Ashenfelter, director of the Keystone Trails Association, says people sometimes have a misconception about hikers. "Some folks thing that you have to go out and hike 20 miles to be a hiker, but that's jut not true," he says. "There's all sorts of hikes. We're leading almost 100 hikes this week. They have various fitness levels." Ashenfelter says all a hiker needs are hiking boots or trail running shoes, proper dress for the weather, water and a snack. The association is teaming with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to host the week's events. Among the midstate activities are a family hike tomorrow at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Berks County and a Thursday morning hike at Nolde Forest State Park in Lancaster County.
