Harrisburg residents begin flood cleanup

Written by  Craig Layne, Morning Edition Host/Reporter

(Harrisburg) -- The swollen Susquehanna River is falling Saturday after flooding low-lying areas of the capital. People who live and work in some of the city's riverfront neighborhoods have been able to start pumping water out their homes and businesses. Chris Frampton is a partner with a financial advisory firm that saw its building almost surrounded by river water. "Fortunately, we didn't get any water on the first floor, but the basement was filled to the ceiling, and we've been pumping out now about a 1,000 gallons-a-minute, and they've been at it for a couple of hours," he said. The Susquehanna crested early yesterday morning at more than eight feed above flood stage. City leaders say more than 5,000 PPL customers will see their power restored Saturday as utility crews and inspectors make their rounds. Dozens of homes and a few businesses are still inundated, especially in Shipoke, where about 200 houses are still surrounded by water. Firefighters are working to clear the thick mud that remains in areas where the flood waters have fallen. Mayor Linda Thompson says though a nighttime curfew and state of emergency are in effect, police will not keep people from beginning repair work. "People have been going into their homes. These people have been through the flood before. They're out there with their boots on, mainly pumping out their basements. We're not going to do anything aggressive to get them out of there." Harrisburg Police Chief, Pierre Ritter, says at least one person has been arrested for violating curfew.
